What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a post that is designed to be placed in the jaw. Once it has formed a bond with the bone, it can perform the same functions as your natural tooth roots, and it can provide support for a crown, bridge, or denture to replace the required number of teeth. Getting new teeth that are supported by artificial roots has many advantages, such as keeping the jawbone stimulated and helping you look younger.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The process of getting dental implants can be divided into four main steps: the initial consultation, the surgery, osseointegration, and the delivery of the final restoration. Our team will be happy to explain the process to you in more detail when you visit our office, but for now, here’s a brief look at what you can expect to happen when you commit to rebuilding your smile with sturdy dental implant posts.

  • Initial Consultation: Our team will examine your mouth to determine whether you’re a viable candidate for dental implants. We’ll inform you of any preliminary treatments that might be needed.
  • Dental Implant Surgery: We’ll numb your mouth, open your gum tissue, and place the necessary number of dental implant posts in pre-determined spots in your jaw.
  • Osseointegration/Abutments: It will take a matter of months for the implants to fuse with the bone. After that, abutments can be attached to the implant posts. (The abutments are what will secure the final restoration in place.)
  • Delivery of the Final Restoration: After your mouth has finished healing, the final restoration can be designed. A personalized crown, bridge, or denture will be attached to the implant posts to act as your new teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Why are dental implants seen as a top tooth replacement option by so many dentists and patients? There are several benefits that can make them an attractive choice:

  • The bond that the implant posts form with the jawbone means that you don’t have to worry about your new teeth slipping, and you will be able to eat a wide variety of foods again.
  • Dental implants can stimulate your jawbone whenever you bite or chew your food. Said stimulation is the key to preventing bone loss.
  • Well-maintained dental implants tend to have very long lifespans, with some being able to last for more than 30 years.
  • It’s very easy to take care of dental implants, and unlike with dentures, you won’t need to worry about buying any special cleaning supplies.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

If you are an adult with a mouth that’s generally in good health, you may be able to qualify for dental implants. We will need to check your jaw to make sure there’s enough bone density for the procedure. Bone grafting and other preparatory procedures may be recommended in order to address any issues that might get in the way of a successful dental implant process.

Missing Single Tooth

Losing even just one tooth can have a negative impact on your everyday life. In order to improve your ability to eat and speak, we can place a dental implant post in the part of the jaw where the tooth was originally located. The post will be used to support a dental crown that has been designed to match the appearance of your natural teeth.

Missing Multiple Teeth

What can you do when multiple teeth in a row are missing? In many cases, it may be possible to replace them all at once with a dental bridge and a pair of dental implants. Attaching a bridge to dental implant posts means that there’s no need for us to make any alterations to the natural teeth next to the gap.

Missing All Teeth

While you can use traditional dentures to replace a full arch of teeth, you also have the option of getting dentures that are supported by four to six carefully placed dental implant posts. Some implant dentures are removable while others are fixed; we can explain the advantages of each and help you figure out which one best suits your needs.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

The cost of your own dental implant procedure may not be the same as that of another patient. After all, there are several variables that need to be taken into account, which we can discuss during your initial consultation. When it comes to dental insurance, your plan may not pay for dental implant surgery, but coverage may be available for other parts of the process, such as the personalized restoration.
