When Do Wisdom Teeth Need to be Extracted?

The mouth doesn’t need the wisdom teeth to carry out its normal functions. As such, if there’s any indication that the wisdom teeth are doing more harm than good, we are likely to recommend that they be extracted in the near future. There are several warning signs that can indicate that wisdom teeth need to be removed for the sake of the patient’s oral health:

  • The other teeth are starting to shift, changing the alignment of the bite.
  • The patient is suffering from tooth decay and gum disease in the areas where the wisdom teeth are located.
  • The patient noticed swelling in their jaw.
  • There is an infection in the patient’s mouth.
  • The patient is experiencing a significant amount of pain.

The Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure

On the day of the wisdom tooth extraction, we will begin by numbing the mouth so that there’s no discomfort during the procedure. For patients who are particularly nervous about the procedure, we may recommend sedation dentistry. Once the necessary preparations have been made, we can move forward with the extraction process.

Here is a brief summary of the steps that we will follow when removing wisdom teeth:

  • First, the gums will be opened so that the teeth can be accessed.
  • The bone tissue around the tooth will be removed.
  • The tooth will be taken out. (Sometimes it will be divided into sections.)
  • The gums will be closed. A piece of gauze will be used to keep the bleeding under control.
